Mersey Gateway

The first phase of applications for the Mersey Gateway Project was submitted to Halton Borough Council at the end of March.

Phase two of the submission will be a series of applications to central government for legal orders. 

There will be an additional public exhibition on the Planning Applications on Tuesday 1st July from 5pm to 7pm at Halton Lodge Community Centre.

Information on the Transport and Works Act is now also available to view online.  The Council has also launched a consultation exercise about its proposals for tolling the Silver Jubilee Bridge when the new bridge opens for use.  Information on the proposed A533 (Silver Jubilee Bridge) Road User Charging Scheme order is available to view online.

Together, these submissions detail the plans for a new six-lane toll bridge crossing the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes and the work along the access routes through the two towns.  They also outline improvements planned for the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

The Mersey Gateway is a £390 million project that would provide a new bridge over the River Mersey between the town of Runcorn and Widnes. The project includes modifications to the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge to improve facilities for public transport, walking and cycling.

The Mersey Gateway would transform the borough of Halton, improve the lives of local people and create new opportunities for business and investment in Halton, Cheshire, the Liverpool city-region, the north west and beyond.

The Silver Jubilee Bridge would also be tolled as part of the project. We are proposing to modify the bridge to make it quicker to cross, safer, cleaner and more reliable for local people to use.
